Appeals by the former head of Carrington Hospital's Whare Paia unit, Titewhai Harawira, and her colleague, Otere Halkyard, against convictions for assault, are continuing in the Court of Appeal. Harawira and Halkyard were two of the five people convicted for their part in an attack on a patient - Charlie Matthews, in the Whare Paia in 1988.
Merle Nowland reports on the claims for the appeal being put forward by the lawyer. Two other members of the Harawira family, jailed for six months for their part in the assault, have had their sentences extended for a second assault. Arthur and Hinewhare Harawira were found guilty of assaulting a Māori elder, Bob Curtis, at a marae.
