This series of recordings was made at the hui to opening the rebuilt meeting house Tamatekapua at Ohinemutu, Rotorua in 1943.
As well as the opening ceremonies, Sir Apirana Ngata (who was Master of Ceremonies for the event) specifically asked the National Broadcasting Service to record traditional waiata, haka and other items from iwi who were present, including Ngāi Tūhoe, Te Whānau-a Apanui and Ngāti Porou.
He then recorded his own commentaries about many of the traditional items, several years later in the late 1940s. These are edited into the Ohinemutu recordings.
This recording opens with Sir Apirana commentaries on several Ngāi Tūhoe items recorded at Ohinemutu.
Oriori: "Whakarongo te taringa ko au..." - lullaby by Te Moa for his son Te pahi.
Waita tangi: "Taku rākau e tau rawa ki te whare..." - lament by Paraone Te Piki for the warriors of Tūhoe killed at Orakau.
Waiata arohoa: "Tēnā loutou te hua mai na..." - love song by Hineiriakina for Te Ihu Waka.
Pātere: "Kahua au ki te kōhā e huaki nei mo wai..." - Manawawera composed by Tutāhuna for Ngāi Tūhoe killed at Orakau. The Ngāi Tūhoe party here is lead by Tuhitāre Hēmi, who announces this and the following items.
Waiata: Tērā te whetū, taukapo ana mai.." - a song from the Mataatua district, attributed to Ngāi Tūhoe.
Pātere: "E hiakai atu ana ahau ki Ruatāhuna..." - a song of abuse by Te Arawa against Ngāi Tūhoe who had defeated them in battle.
Pātere whakautu: " Ē ko Te Rangi-ka-tukua koe.." - a taunting reply by Ngāi Tūhoe against Te Arawa.
The next series of recordings are by the Ngāti Porou party at the Ohinemutu hui.
