Excerpts from events during the Mauri Ora, New Zealand Māori Council Youth Week.
The main purpose of the youth week was to bring to public notice, Māori success in all fields. This hui was sponsored by the Auckland District Māori Council. The activities for the week were many and varied. It opened with the traditional Māori welcome followed by such activities as the presentation of the top Māori entertainers and sportsman, Young Māori Man and Woman of the Year, visits to prisons and marae projects, the John Rowles show and an open forum debate between young and old.

One of the highlights of the week was an open forum debate, The NZ Māori Council on trial', coverings such things as land issues, Māori education, fisheries, welfare.

- kaikōrero: John Rowles [excerpt of his song Cheryl Moana Marie] is interviewed about his childhood in Kawerau. He says his father was a well-known local singer from Mataatua. He was a Māori All Black who toured with the team in Fiji in 1938. He says his father encouraged his singing. He talks about singers who influenced him, such as The Platters and Elvis Presley. He says he didn't take his singing career seriously until he went to England and had some success with 'If I only had Time" and realised he could turn professional.[Excerpt of John Rowles, 'By the time I get to Phoenix.']
