149th Observances of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi:

Many hundreds of people attended the 149th observances of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi held at Waitangi.

The pōhiri was given by the paddlers of the waka taua "Ngātokimatawhaorua" and the Taitokerau Cultural group. The ope manuhiri included members of the diplomatic corps; the Minister of Māori Affairs (Rt. Hon. Koro Wetere); Minster of Internal Affairs, Dr. Michael Bassett; Mr. Peter Tapsell; Minister of Police and the Leader of Opposition (the Hon. Jim Bolger).
