UPOKO

E ngana ana te kura o Te Kopuru i TTT, kia whai karaahe reo rua, mehemea ka
tautokotia.

=========================
Te Kopuru School will have a bilingual class next year if there is sufficient
support.

The school is canvassing its community over the possibility of setting up a
unit offering between 50 and 80 per cent of teaching across the curriculum in
te reo.

"Our aim would be to have children fluent in both languages by Form 2," says
principal Lee Anderson.

A minimum of 10 to 15 students will be needed and she hopes non Māori
children, as well as Māori, will want to take up the option, saying
bi-lingual classes have been demonstrated to have advantages.

"Statistics prove that children who learn a second language benefit by
learning skills, gain greater confidence and are better prepared to take
their place in a multi cultural society.

"Those students who work hard to do really well in te reo Māori consistently
show superior results in most of their other subjects."

Lee Anderson says there is growing recognition of the importance of te reo
Māori as one of the two main languages in New Zealand.

"Experiencing Tikanga Māori should be an essential element of the climate of
NZ schools.

"We want our students at Te Kopuru to better understand the values and
cultures of its peoples."

She says stepping into a bi-lingual class would not be a total shock for most
Te Kopuru students as the whole school currently spends up to three hours a
week studying Māori.

The Board of Trustees has been sounding out community opinion this term and
this will continue for the next couple of months. Most feedback so far has
been supportive.

Next move will be a meeting on Oturei Marae which Mrs Anderson is hoping will
be well attended.

"Kaore e tika ana nga mahere akoako tamariki Māori, i roto i nga kura tuarua
o te Motu, koina kaore o tatau tamariki e mohio ki te paanui pukapuka."

He kōrero tenei i puta i a Bill Tunmer o te whare wananga o Te Putahi a Toi,
i te hui taumata matauranga a Ngāti Kahungunu i te wiki ki muri.

Me nga kaupapa i puta i taua hui, anei a Tuahine Joe Northover...
-===================
Māori children cannot be expected to learn to read successfully under the
teaching system favoured in New Zealand schools, a university professor says.

Professor Bill Tunmer, of Massey University, was speaking at the Ngāti
Kahungunu knowledge wave education summit in Hastings this week.

Professor Tunmer said research had shown a big gap between the best and worst
readers, with Māori children from poor homes over-represented among the
worst.

The "whole language" method of teaching reading favoured by New Zealand
schools for the past 30 years was failing many children, but particularly
Māori, who commonly started school with little or no experience of books and
reading.

A study had revealed that Māori children taught to read using programmes
including phonics was far more successful, he said.

"Provided our findings are an accurate depiction of reality, a disturbing
implication of our findings is that the learn-to-read-by-reading literacy
instruction in New Zealand is functionally discriminatory."
