KAIKōRERO: Caroline Puke speaks with Nukia Ponika-Rangi. Caroline grew up
with her kuia and koroua / Tawhiao ki te Rangi Maungarongo Uwerata, and Mihi-
-taurangi Hekitia ko Nukuhia Uwerata = Tupuwahia Tapu ko Tukutahi Tupu=Tairere
Raninatini and so on to Kararaina Puke, Taupiri te maunga, Tainui te waka, Hoturoa
te Rangatira, Mokoroa te marae, Me Ararangi te Whitu te Pa, ko Ngāti Mahuta me
Ngāti Kiriwai nga hapu, Kawhia te moana, Kawhia Kai, Kawhia tangata, Aotea whenua,
Waikato te Iwi, Waikato te Awa, he piko he taniwha.
Caroline grew up with her tipuna and with her mother tounge te reo Māori. They lived in
a cave for five months then moved to whare pou, brought up in the church.
Kapok (rauwha) thatch for matresses, pillows stone, blankets Peeke rakua
for blakets, cooked outside, tin used as plates, rua also. Later she showed
children how she lived, they laughed.
Their gardens lasted from one season to the next, rua were dug for kumara..
From the cave they moved into a kauta(Lean two) used bags for windows.
She and her sister collected food from the bush, fished from the sea and river.
Wild grapes grew on stones !! table was outside, plates and utensils were kuatai
shells, later they got pakeha utensils, they were very poor, and happy.
Their school clothes were made from flour bags(Puurere), She was strapped for
speaking Māori at school, did not know any English words, pointed to things in
the shop if they wanted anything.(Glavant bear tobacco).
Kura tua rua was at Kawhia, and learnt English, found it difficult. Played tennis and
basketball....Caroline wanted to go nursing, but had no skills. From school she went
shearing flissoing, then teacher aide, in te reo Māori. then went to Te Wananga o
Aotearoaki te ako te Reo.
She worked at the Whare Manaki, Weymouth Residential Centre, for rangatahi, didn't
like the job. From there she went to Kawhia School and taught Te Reo.
Her dreams are that Māori hold onto their Reo and tikanga....anei ra te waiata a
Kararaina me tona hoa rangatira a Hone...."E tu ana ahau i raro i te mahi a ringa..
..a Tawhiao..........Te ataahua o nga kōrero a te kuia nei........progm ends.
