Spare a thought for the rural country store. As supermarkets and shopping complexes flourish, country stores have had to adapt or go out of business. Since just after the turn of the century, the Bell family has run the general store in Waimana in Tuhoe heartland.
Alan Bell who is now semi-retired runs the store with his brother and nephew. Alan's father, Henry Bell was storekeeper during the period of power of the prophet, Rua Kenana whose community lived at Maungapohatu. But, it was Alan's grandfather, Edward who began the Bell connection with Waimana. Alan talks about his life and growing up in Waimana and Opotiki and the changes he has seen through the area.
