individual identity and mana.
Anahera Vercoe talks with and about Harata Day / Ngai Tuhoe. She begins her
story about growing up as child in Ruatoki, her mana being her Reo....
Harata spoke English at school, when she arrived home it was Te Reo always. Harata
went onto Turakina Girls School was one of the very few students who spoke te reo
fluently. She was there till the 6th form returned to Whakatane for her 7th form. Moved
to Auckland for work, married had two children then separated.
Returned to Ruatoki with her children and found work, eventually she trained as a
teacher, married again and had two more children. Her second husband was a school
teacher. Harata did papers with Massey and now works for the NZQA Kura Kaupapa
Māori, Wharekura and Kura Auraki hoki. Her Husband became Deputy Principal at
Kawerau College.....NB....te ataahua o nga kōrero a tenei wahine.
