Wellington Access Radio was the first community/access radio station to broadcast regularly in New Zealand.

This collection contains recordings of the first broadcast (5 April 1981) as well various programmes that were pre-recorded or recorded off-air from 1981 to the mid-1990s. The collection also includes non-Access Radio produced programmes, along with various advertising campaigns (up until 2002).

The bulk of the collection contains programming from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s.

The collection comprises:

51 x misc (cdr; dvd; cassette; minidisc; cart)

Some highlights include (as noted from tape boxes by GW 3/6/15):

Access Radio: First broadcast of Wellington Access Radio (5 April 1981); Access radio birthday festival concerts - 1982 and 1986, Taste of Access (samplers, 1985).

Māori: talkback on Māori language learning (1988), race relations hui (1988), Powhiri mo te Te Puni Kokiri (1993).

Poetry: Polynesian women's poetry (1983); poems from prison; poets in 1982 including Bill Manhire, Lauris Edmond, Apirana Taylor, Fiona Kidman and Ian Wedde.

Creative writing: short stories from a variety of participants on local creative writing courses (late 1980s - early 1990s).

Music: Wellington street buskers (1981), NZ protest songs (1982), the congregational church of American Samoa - Wainuiomata (1989), NZ green music show featuring Paremoana Community Polytechnic music course (1988), various Pasifika music tapes.

Specific communities of interest: Peace report, Woman Zone, Environmental Concerns; youth and children’s programming (by youth), Pasifika programming, Assyrian Voice, Indian community programme, Lesbian community programme etc.

Advertising: local and national advertising campaigns (mid 1990s to 2002), some target specific communities - i.e. ads in Samoan, Tongan etc.

Non-Access Radio produced material: De week in Nederland (mid 1980s), BBC in Concert (early 1990s), Caffeine comedy hour (mid 1990s), Kiwi Chat Lounge (with NZ musicians) and other Studio Time (via NZ On Air funding) syndicated productions. There is also a tape marked: 2nd Antarctic supply trip (1969).
