PARTICLES IN SPACE

“All of a sudden it hit me - if there was such a thing as composing music, there could be such a thing as composing motion. After all, there are melodic figures, why can’t there be figures of motion?” This involved “...vibrating dots and dashes which swirled, pulsed, squiggled, and darted about the screen... I hadn’t the foggiest idea what they were all about and simply called them particles in space” - Len Lye.

Made by scratching black film with various sharp tools and synchronising the images to rhythmic music.
