NZ SOLDIERS AND POLISH CHILDREN
Polish refugees arrive in Wellington on board a ship returning soldiers from the war in Egypt and Europe. 725 children and 113 adults board two trains for the last stage of their journey to accommodation near Pahiatua. On arrival they join in a service of remembrance for those from whom they were parted in their war torn homeland. Apart from assisted and planned immigration, another sector of immigrants began arriving during and after World War Two: displaced persons and political refugees from war-torn countries. Much of this immigration happened in co-operation with the International Refugee Organisation.
