Intertitles: FIRE DESTROYS SCHOOL OF ARTS BUILDINGS
Every available fire-engine from the central and suburban stations raced to Symonds Street in the early hours of the morning to a fire at Auckland Grammar School. Opened by Sir George Grey, this wooden building was first occupied by the Auckland Grammar School, then in recent years by the Workers Educational Association, the Elam School of Art and the Regional Council of Adult Education. Irreplaceable works of art from the Elam School of Art, paintings, books etc are destroyed. Alternative accommodation has to be found for over 250 art students, hundreds of adults who attend evening classes of the WEA and Adult Education Centre.
OPERATION: ‘CATTLE’
Six years ago this exercise was the usual sight around the Solomon Islands.Ships and thousands of men made the beach landings to recapture the land taken by the Japanese. Today the ship Rawhiti is transporting 368 head of Northland cattle that are embarked from the Tamaki River, Auckland. Their destination is Russell Island in the Solomons and is the largest single shipment of livestock ever to leave New Zealand. After a 10 day journey the cattle arrived looking fit and well.
WAIKATO WINTER SHOW
The 1949 Waikato Winter Show in June was opened by the Mayor Mr Carlo. Mr WM Perry, Dominion president of the New Zealand Federated Farmers stressed the main purpose of the show was for closer co-operation between farmers, industrialists and consumers. The finest examples of goods was on display and the amusement park provided entertainment for others. The beef championships were held in the Franklin stock yards and 350 head of cattle were trucked from throughout the province for judging. Days later at the Westfield Freezing Works hundreds of farmers and their friends saw the champions on the hook.
Judges were: P Marks, JD Anderson and JH Trail. Mr F Bennett - NZ Meat Producers Board and H McGregor of W&R Fletcher Ltd. Sir Alexander Young presented the prize for the best chiller steer to AE Richardson of Te Akau? Many other officials also attended the show.

“First Pictures Of The Proposed Works For The Alliance Freezing Co. Ltd. To Be Erected At Waikiwi, Southland.”
It has been more than 30 years since a new freezing works was built in the Dominion.A proposed model displayed at the Royal Show at Invercargill attracted huge interests. The acquisition of such works will add one million pounds sterling to the district’s income.
Farmers gathered to witness the weighing of the Champion Sow World Record Litter. Fifteen12 week old piglets weighed an average of 98lbs per piglet, adding to a total figure of 1,480lbs for the whole litter.

“M.V. “Haparangi” Arrives With Interesting Deck-Cargo”
Several breeds of British cattle and sheep arrive on board the Haparangi at an Auckland wharf.They were taken by barge to Motutapu island to undergo 30 days of quarantine. Many are the first of their breed to be imported to New Zealand with the view to strengthening New Zealand’s livestock industry and thus bettering the Dominion’s production in beef, mutton, wool, butter and sheep.
BULL SALE
“National Jersey Show And Sale At Claudelands”
The 26th Annual National Jersey Show at Claudelands, Hamilton, brought many eager dairy farmers to see and bid for some of the finest bulls in New Zealand. In the show ring bulls were awarded ribbons in various categories before being paraded for the sale.
WORLD RECORD PIG LITTER
At Ardmore a world record litter of pigs was visited. Their average weight at 268lbs, presented a total of 4, 040lbs.

WAIKATO FACIAL ECZEMA PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
Tirau farmer Mr HL Bailey? had his own method of dealing with the facial eczema problem.
By packing sheep into a small area reduces their intake of young grass. To keep them in good condition he supplements their feed with a concentrate of 4oz of Tomoana? sheep pellets per sheep a day, until the new season’s grass growth is safe for feeding. Tomoana sheep nuts are also fed to ewes during drought periods.
BAY OF PLENTY HAY STACKING MADE EASIER
Mr Marcus Wilkins of Kaingaroa, Bay of Plenty built a labour saving hay pen. Hay is scooped into the pen by the tractor driver and one or two men can easily spread it around the deep palatable. Cheap to construct the hay pen enables the hay drying process to be secure and under correct requirements.
Waikato FEEDING OUT 1948
A Matangi farmer feeds out cows from a trailer drawn by his famous robot tractor. Made from an old car purchased for £5 it is not streamline, is built for service not speed and with a certain firm whistle will stop.
Manawatu DEMONSTRATIONS
A British built robot transplanter is demonstrated to a number of interested farmers and market gardeners at Massey. With four operators, 3000 plants can be easily planted in an hour. After several rows are planted people are given the opportunity to check out the results.
Agriculturalists of the Manawatu district are given a lecture and demonstration of the Sigmund? Irrigation System.
SOUTHLAND ROYAL SHOW 1948
Opening in disapointing weather with a record entry of high quality livestock of every kind. The agriculture section showed everything from live-stock competitions, quality manufactured products, clothing and processed foods. A model of the proposed works for the Alliance Freezing Co. Ltd. to be erected at Waikiwi, Southland, was the centre of attraction.
