RNZAF COMING OF AGE: The 21st birthday of the Royal New Zealand Air force is celebrated at Ohakea Air base. An estimated crowd of 120,000 flocked to the event to watch some spectacular flying by RNZAF and international guests.
The Governor General Lord Cobham and Lady Cobham were present as was the acting Prime Minister the Hon C.F. Skinner, General Curtis Le May - the Deputy Chief of the U.S. Air force, Air Vice Marshall Kay and Air Marshall Shirger (?) of the RAAF. The Minister of Defence, Mr Connolly, welcomed the overseas visitors.
The planes on display included the RNZAF Sunderland Flying Boat, the RAAF’s Canberra and Neptune, the US C130 Hercules and the RNZAF’s Vampire jets which flew in formation to form a 21 in the sky.
