ROY A EVANS presents “PEOPLE OF THE PACIFIC”
“FIJI”
A map of the Fiji islands.
Various brief shots include: the beaches, coral beds, fish, children bathing in the surf, a Fijian woman and the flora and fauna.
Pigs roam around the area where women are bundling up pandanus leaves and the men are preparing and stripping vines for the building of a house. 0--
A Fijian woman doing the washing in a warm stream. An Indian man cooks food in a hot pool. A Fijian couple husks and scrapes coconuts. Two men cut down green coconuts and drink the milk. Men collect, cut open the coconuts, remove the meat from the husk ready for bagging. The bags of coconut are then transported to the plant where the meat is processed for its oil then laid out in huge quantities to dry. A truck delivers the bags of coconut / copra to the Morris Hedstrom Ltd store on the island - Taveuni?
Men unloading yams from the back of a truck. A bundle of Vudi (green cooking bananas).
Men on board launch head out into the harbour. Bags of copra stacked on the wharf ready for being transport. Truck loads of copra waiting to be off loaded into ships hull.
Two young lads display a huge piece of coral straight from the sea. Eating crabs plucked from the sea. Climbing a coconut palm.
Young school students dancing outdoors and enjoying a rugby game. Parents and students view the game from the perimeter of the grounds.
“SAMOA”
Men walking across field. In the background are several fale (houses). Two elders (one holds a long carved pipe) sit chatting outside a fale. Man sits carving while a child sitting next to him looks on. Pieces of taro and peeled bananas are covered with banana leaves and left to cook in the umu. A man wades through a mangrove swamp to set his fishing net.
Young lads decorate the bridal car with shells. Shots of the bride, her attendants and family taken at home.
Sign over entrance reads “Photo Studio H. Forsgren.”
The happy couple emerge from the church. Visit the hospital (religious sisters bid farewell as they leave), emerge from another house before arriving for the huge outdoor wedding reception. A large umu is uplifted and the final touches are being made to the 5 tier wedding cake. There is much dancing and entertainment followed by the presentation of gifts and speeches.
Man felling coconuts with the help of a long pole. Plantation workers knock cocoa pods from tree, split them open, empty beans into cans ready to be processed and dried. Man checks beans drying in the sun. Locals load and off load sacks of produce into container ships.
The End.
