FUNERAL OF SIR APIRANA NGATA: Manuhiri from various tribes throughout New Zealand assemble at Waiomatatini near Ruatoria for the tangi of Sir Apirana Ngata. The Prime Minister, Mr Holland and Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Corbett, present a bronze bust of Sir Apirana on behalf of the government. It is accepted by his brother Hone Ngata on behalf of the people of Ngati Porou. Henare Ngata (Apirana’s son) removes a korowai and other taonga from the coffin before he is taken for burial at the family urupa (cemetery), overlooking the land he loved.
CHRISTCHURCH PREPARES: Twelve months of celebrations, including the Centennial Parade, are being planned for the Canterbury Centennial.
English Park is being repaved for world cyclists to take part in the January 1951 Games. The Avon River, the Olympic Pool and many other historic places are being revamped for the Centennial. Artist Russell Clarke works on a model of Lyttelton Harbour.
