Title: “RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL NEWTON V PONSONBY. AUCKLAND DOMAIN. WHITTINGTON ROOPE HON SEC.”
“PONSONBY TEAM”
Team emerges from beside grandstand between packed crowd and prominent official at edge of field, perhaps Whittington Roope. Possibly played in July 1918.
“NEWTOWN TEAM. THE WINNERS. SCORE 11-10.”
Newton emerge.
The game is played at furious pace with the crowd around the edges of the field and packed into the grandstand and on the bank on either side.
MCU of crowd, panning left to right over faces, mainly men, with some soldiers evident in the crowd.
Two officials confer, one of whom is the same as in the opening shot, most likely Whittington Roope who may have given permission to film at the price of a mention.
The film ends with the Dominion Film Company logo.
This is a little gem of a film, setting the scene, giving the result and then a generous look at the crowd. Tight and to the point by a master, Charles Newham.
