After Mia was revealed to be the most popular Māori baby name some are questioning if it is a Māori name. One expert in Māori language says it is not a name, but can be part of Māori words. Heta Gardiner reports: Tāwhirimātea Williams, Mātanga Reo.

Auckland Women’s Refuge are asking for an increase in funding so they can assist those suffering from family and domestic violence. The Refuge says that Christmas and New Year are the busiest time for support centres and each year has seen a significant increase in the number of people seeking help. Jacinda Ardern will not be attending the Rātana celebrations this year as she will be occupied at the World Economic Forum in Davos. A Members bill from the National Party would see fines for littering increased in an effort to deter such behaviour. Local Councils are thought to be ignoring littering and rubbish dumping and it is hoped a financial incentive would make enforcement more attractive.
