This item is part of the Tauranga Libraries Norman Blackie Collection. Norman Blackie (1899-1993) was a keen amateur filmmaker who captured civic events around Tauranga using a modified Keystone Model A7 16mm camera.
This actuality shows the Tauranga Orange Festival activities and the Royal Thai visit in 1962. Scenes include: crowning the festival Queen [Miss I. Sissons?]; orange and floral displays; and street parade with floats. Festivities in the park include woodchopping, shot put, bagpipe band, throw the sack, Scottish dancing and running races, as large crowds look on from the grandstand.
Scenes from the Royal Thai visit include: Mayor, D. S. Mitchell, officials and public waiting at the airport; Royal Standard of Thailand flag on official car; Royal NZ Airforce plane arrives; King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit of Thailand are greeted by officials; crowds line the roads as the Royals make their way by motorcade to an official reception; and a public ceremony with wero, haka and speeches.
