This item is part of the Tauranga Libraries Norman Blackie Collection. Norman Blackie (1899-1993) was a keen amateur filmmaker who captured civic events around Tauranga using a modified Keystone Model A7 16mm camera.

This actuality shows scenes from the Tauranga Airport, Tauranga Highland Games, and Whakaari White Island.

Footage from the reopening of the Tauranga Airport [after it was resealed in 1967] includes a ceremony with town officials, a parachute jump and an impressive air show.

The next scenes show festivities in a park, including farming exhibitions, gymnastics and dance routines. Further scenes [possibly from the Highland Games, an activity run during the Orange Festival] include: a street parade; bagpipe band; people dressed in kilts; a flag raising ceremony; gymnastics; wood chopping competition; marching demonstrations; and ceremonies with the festival Queens with Mauao Mount Maunganui in the background.

Further footage shows: people surfing at the beach next to Moturiki Island; a group [Auckland Tramping Club] visiting active geysers on Whakaari White Island; farmers harvesting grain with machines.
