This item is part of the Tauranga Libraries Norman Blackie Collection. Norman Blackie (1899-1993) was a keen amateur filmmaker who captured civic events around Tauranga using a modified Keystone Model A7 16mm camera.

This actuality shows scenes and activities from the Tauranga Orange Festival in 1967. Opening slates introduce the festival and some of its officials. Scenes show the festival Queen arriving in a car then walking the down street with others and looking around in a glasshouse. The festival Queen contestants pose with others in front of aeroplane at an airport. The National Orange Show California Queen arrives plane and is greeted by officials and presented with bouquet of flowers. Festival Queens pose in front of plane and then travel by bus and Landrover to Mauao, Mt Maunganui.

Scenes of the festival Queens [at Tauranga Primary School]. The hangi is opened by the festival Queens and other food is being prepared, presented and eaten at the school. The festival Queens sit with children who perform waiata. A group of festival Queens and officials visiting Ranginui wharenui.

Scenes from the Orange Festival Ball, including: the festival Queens and various ball guests arriving at the hall; the band playing; the crowning ceremony; and shots of people dancing including a group doing hula.

Further festival scenes include: a hoola-hoop demonstration; awards ceremony; food being prepared; children in fancy dress enjoying lolly scramble; and decorated shop windows and displays celebrating the Orange Festival. Footage of games and activities include: pillow fight on a log; tug of war; eating toffee apples on string, prizes being awarded and speeches as the crowd looks on. Scenes of the festival Queens visiting sites in Tauranga include: the Mount Maunganui Domain Board Hot Mineral Pools; a factory; the beach; and Mount Marineland where they watch and take part in feeding exercises.

Scenes of various groups and floats in the Orange Festival parade, including Tauranga Jaycess, Te Puke Primary School, Omokoroa No1 School, Kaimai, Greenpark School, New Zealand Air Force Association, a pipe band, Katikati Young Farmers, Rotary, Plunket, a fire engine, IZD Voice of the Bay, T.W. Case Co. Ltd., Greerton Kindy, Junior Red Cross; Formalities on stage include Orange festival Queens and officials giving speeches.

Scenes and activities at the racecourse include a festival Queen ceremony, magic show and marching girls. Scenes of the festival Queens at Hairini Marae include inside and outside the wharenui and talking and posing with children. Further footage shows the festival Queens at Mauao, Mount Maunganui, touring the suburbs and harbour; posing with a Tauranga travel brochure; The National Orange Show California Queen admiring a tui in a kowhai tree.
