A journey through the North Island with Mr and Mrs Scott. A map traces their route to New Zealand from San Francisco, via Honolulu, Canton Island, Fiji and Norfolk Island and brief scenes from these places are included. Aerial views taken from the plane include the flight over Pitcairn Island.
Auckland scenes and views. Rural views taken on the way to Rotorua. Mrs Scott is greeted at the gateway to Whakarewarewa by Guide Rangi who takes her on a tour of the village, pointing out items of interest, including the carving on a pātaka, thermal activity, cooking and washing in the hot pools, weaving. The action moves to Fairy Springs with shots of trout being fed. A Māori concert party performing at Whakarewarewa. One performer is Emily Schuster. Mrs Scott enjoys a cup of tea with Guide Rangi. Rapids on the Waikato River and a ferry ride to Ōrakei Korako. Views of the terraces. A man prepares a hangi. Scenic views, in long shot, around Lake Taupō. “New Zealand is truly a fisherman’s paradise.” Mr and Mrs Scott trout fishing on Lake Taupō, later they hold-up their catch for the camera. Shots of Alan Pye, one of New Zealand’s expert fly fisherman, angling in a river. Includes shots of Huka Lodge which is run by Mr Pye. Views of Huka Falls (“a miniature Niagara”), the Arapuni Falls and power house, hydro-electric station and suspension bridge.
The tour party move on to Waitomo Hotel. Guests wait for the bus to take them to the glow-worm caves. Wairakei Geyser Valley, general views include shots of the Bridal Veil, Devil’s Cauldron, Eagle’s Nest, Emerald Pool, Ink Pot and Dragon’s Mouth geysers and flora. Views of the beautifully coloured terraces in the Waiotapu Valley and then Lake Waikaremoana. A demonstration on how to make billy tea which Mr and Mrs Scott enjoy with their picnic lunch on the shores of the lake, after lunch they again board their launch and continue exploring the lake. Arrival at Tauranga, “headquarters for deep sea fishing in the area.” Aerial views of the coastline and commentary on record fish caught in the area. Views of the mountains on the central plateau. Aerial views over Mt Tongariro and its crater.
Views of Jerusalem on the Whanganui River taken during a journey on the river boat. Passengers on deck enjoy a cup of tea. Napier Esplanade. Botanic Gardens at “Wanganui and Hastings” general scenes of flowers. Flowers grow easy in this temperate land... even the the smallest towns have fine gardens... surely New Zealand is one of the world’s most beautiful countries.” Views of bowlers playing lawn bowls at Cambridge. Voice over describes the competitive bowls scene in every city and small town. The Kiwi, New Zealand’s national bird. The journey ends in Wellington, capital city.
