Reo Māori dialects explored in new online audiovisual collection
Tātai Aho Rau Core Education and Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision have partnered to publish an online curated collection of audiovisual taonga that explores the rich diversity of te reo Māori mita (dialects) across Aotearoa.
The curated collection He Reo Rongomaiwhiti – Our Ancestors’ Voices has been designed as an educational resource, drawing on historic audiovisual archival material from the Taonga Māori Collection Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision cares for. The selection of audio and video presented illustrate the varying dialects and how they differ from region to region.
“We hope that the collection we curated with Tātai Aho Rau Core Education will serve as a valuable resource for current and future generations of reo Māori speakers,” says Paul Meredith, Pou Arahi - Deputy Chief Executive, Māori - Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision.
For learners and fluent speakers alike, the collection will help strengthen their understanding of how the language was once spoken, and to discover elements of te reo that are now less common.
"Tātai Aho Rau are committed to the revitalisation of te reo Māori," says Tumu Whakarae Maralda Williams. "We're so pleased to work with Ngā Taonga to locate these excellent examples of te reo Māori and to help make them available."
The collection can be found on the Ngā Taonga website and is available in both te reo Māori and English.
Ngā Taonga and Tātai Aho Rau thank the rights holders and kaitiaki of the featured collection items for allowing them to be included in this educational language resource.
