Talk by His excellency the Governor of New Caledonia, M. Jacques Tallec.

"The people of New Caledonia made the New Zealand soldiers welcome. The
New Zealand Army gave medical and dental treatment to New Caledonians in
isolated areas. The day after Pearl Harbour the leader of fighting
France declared war against Japan and placed the French Pacific
territories at the disposal of the Allies. In October 1942 the first New
Zealand troops arrived in Noumea. At first the New Zealand force did
garrison duty. Later the Division changed to a combat role and most
soldiers left New Caledonia".
