A 24 hour recording of the RNZ National capturing coverage of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake located 33 kilometres south east of Christchurch, which struck at 4:35am on 4 September, 2010.
Radio New Zealand delivered four and a half hours of special programming along with significantly extended news bulletins on Saturday, 4 September. Broadcasts of emergency information began within minutes of the first shake. Texts from listeners together with GNS scientific data, and civil defence guidelines were used by news staff and overnight presenter, Vicki McKay, to inform listeners, before official advice was available.
(Music tracks and Storytime have been edited from online audio due to copyright.)
Recording begins at 0435 - Interviews by Simon Morton.
Announcer vicky McKay notes the quake has been felt in Wellington and reads some inital readings from Geonet's website which at first only show the quake in the lower North Island.
