Alistair McAlpine investigates the rumours of a ghost in residence at the Chateau Tongariro on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu, rumoured to have been there since the days when the hotel was a psychiatric hospital between 1942 and 1945.
Hotel manager Christine Griffin describes the Ruapehu Room, which is almost unchanged since the building opened in 1929 as a holiday retreat for the wealthy. However, the Depression brought difficult times.

The hotel became a psychiatric hospital for three years after the Porirua Hospital in Wellington was badly damaged by an earthquake. She describes the building's ghost, Charlie, a patient who hung himself in one of the hotel's rooms, which he now haunts.

She says night porters often won't vacuum that part of the hotel at night. She and Alistair explore the room, which is unusually cold. She tells stories about guests and staff encountering Charlie the ghost.

Kevin McDowell, the night porter talks about his experiences with Charlie and another ghost in the hotel conference room. His predecessor locked himself in the bar after a frightening encounter with a ghost.
