Side 1.
The Right Honourable M. J. Savage records an address marking the opening of the new commercial radio station, 2ZA, at Palmerston North. Mr Savage said it was a pleasure to be able to give the Palmerston North people the service and the entertainment it will give. He describes to the people of New Zealand something of the history of the new undertaking and outlines the "real" position of the commercial service as it existed at the time.
He said that this was in view of the National Party's manifesto, issued a a few weeks previously, which stated "The existing dual control of radio broadcasting services with divided authorities, duplicated equipment and staffs will be ended. The services will be placed under one authority and Commercial Broadcasting will be put on a sound business footing."
Mr Savage describes the Labour Government's reasons for choosing the dual system. He said that the opening of the new commercial service for Palmerston North was the first step in an extension of this service to other areas in New Zealand.
