A recording made in 1949 by Henare Hāmana [also known as Harry Salmon] who mimics the different calls of the extinct huia bird. He was a member of an expedition in 1909 that tried unsuccessfully to find any remaining huia in the North Island bush.
His bird calls are preceded by an introduction by R.A. L. Batley of Moawhango, who arranged for Mr Hāmana to go to Wellington to make the recording.
Mr Batley explains the recording is being made to preserve what the call of the huia sounded like, and gives some details about the 1909 expedition that Mr Hāmana was involved in.
