Edited highlights of the opening of the ANZCAN submarine telephone cable on 8 November 1984.
Taking part in the ceremony in the Council Chamber of the New Zealand Parliament Buildings were the Director General of the NZ Post Office Mr F. K McInerney, the Postmaster General and Minister of Broadcasting the Hon Jonathan Hunt, and the PM Rt Hon David Lange.

The Queen opened the cable (via satellite) from the Berkeley Hotel in London.
