Tk 2: 04'10" RPM: Which Way to Paradise?
Writer, poet and performer Tusiata Avia takes us on a journey in sound through the life of her father, a Samoan immigrant who escaped the "paradise" of the Pacific 50 years ago and has lived in Christchurch ever since.
Tusiata says:
'My father grew up in Paradise. No, really, Paradise - even Hollywood thought so. In 1953 Hollywood came to my father's village in Samoa to film the Gary Cooper star-vehicle 'Return to Paradise'. My father, Namulauulu Mikaio Avia had a number of roles as an extra in this film. This film was a quiet legend to me growing up in Christchurch. Ironically I had never actually seen the film untill the making of this documentary programme. That same year he left Samoa for a life in New Zealand where he has lived more or less, ever since.'
Like most Samoans, my father came to New Zealand 'to earn money to help the family'. And like most Samoans, he has supported his extended family in Samoa and New Zealand. His expectations of coming to this country were not always fulfilled, just as my experience of making this programme often yielded something quite different to what I expected.'
