The speech delivered to the Orewa Rotary Club on the last Tuesday in January 2004 by the leader of the National Party, Dr Don Brash.
His message was that all New Zealanders should be treated equally, i.e. no special programmes or policies for Māori.
It caused immediate controversy. Shortly afterwards, opinion polls showed a leap in support for National to 45%, with Labour 37% - a big turnaround in National's fortunes.
