This recording features a Radio New Zealand Morning Report news package by Ewart Barnsley on the Māori welcome given to the South African Springbok rugby team at Gisborne's Te Poho-o-Rawiri Marae, during their 1981 tour of New Zealand.

Excerpts of the haka pōwhiri and a speech by the Chairman of the New Zealand Māori Council, Sir Graham Latimer, warning this will be the last such Māori welcome for a Springbok team, unless change comes to South Africa's policy of apartheid.

An excerpt of the reply by Abe Williams, the coloured assistant manager of the Springboks, defending South Africa's slow process of change.

Wynand Claassen, the Springboks captain speaks on rugby's role in breaking down barriers and the team sing a song in Afrikaans.

About 50 protestors gathered outside the marae gates while the welcome continued.
