Tagata o te Moana is a weekly Pacific programme, broadcast on Radio New Zealand National (Saturdays at 5.30pm). It features news, interviews, and discussion of issues. Presented by Don Wiseman.
The programme for 22 December 2007 includes the following:
- Governments are toppled in Nauru and Solomon Islands.
- Samoans march in their thousands to oppose changing to driving on the other side of the road. The Prime Minister has proposed changing from driving on the right, to driving on the left - sparking a huge amount of protest.
- American Samoa's US Congressman vents his anger when his five day trip to Papua is cut back by the Indonesian military.
- A proposal to create a new French territory in the Pacific has stunned the political leadership in Tahiti. The Mayor of Ua Pou in the Marquesas Islands, mooted the idea during a visit by a French Minister.
- Claims that Marshall Islands will continue to support Taiwan despite statements to the contrary by one of the parties that could become the government next month.
- The Cook Islands Government is asked to show more commitment to its own renewable energy projects.
- Vanuatu's Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Wells, has announced that his Ministry will be cancelling around 40 diplomatic passports. The government says there are around 250 registered diplomatic passports currently issued, and its beginning a process of ensuring tighter control on who is holding one and whether they're allowed to. The unlawful issuing of diplomatic passports is a lingering problem for Vanuatu.
- People from Pukapuka (to the North of the Cook Islands) will come together over Christmas, to celebrate the arrival of Christianity on their home island in 1857.
