This is the first in a series of raw recordings of the first Korimako speech contest. The aim of the contest was to improve spoken English in Māori secondary school pupils.

The Korimako speech contest was sponsored by the Māori Education Foundation and the Post Primary Teachers Association.

The judges were Charles Bennett, assistant secretary of Māori Affairs, Dr K.J. Sheen, assistant director of Education, Mrs J.C. Baxter, Maori Education Foundation trustee.

Listed are the first four speakers:

TP Andrews Wanganui Boys College.

Hēnare Broughton, Rangiora High School.
