[28 Māori Battalion. Christmas Day 1942].

A compilation of five edited audio cuts (taken from recordings which exist elsewhere in the collection.)

1. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Bennett, Commander of the 28 Māori Battalion, recalls events leading up to Christmas Day 1942. He informed his troops that on Christmas Day no shots were to be fired, only in self-defence. He felt sure that the Germans would also respect this ruling. He describes Christmas in 1942 in the Western Desert.

2. Lieutenant Colonel Bennett speaks about the attack on Point 209, Takrouna, with special reference to Lieutenant Ngarimu's Victoria Cross award. This was at the dedication of a flagpole memorial to Ngarimu held at Gisborne. Recorded 27 March 1964.

3."Ngarimu the Māori" is a dramatised account of Ngarimu's Victoria Cross action and death. Sir Bernard Freyberg, Commander of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, speaks of the deeds of the Māori Battalion. There follows a poem about Lieutenant Ngarimu written by Mrs Dorothy Baddeley of Tauranga and read by Bernard Beeby.

4. The voice of Lieutenant Ngarimu greeting his mother in Māori. This recording came from "With the Boy's Overseas" programme in which the New Zealand Broadcasting Service recorded messages from servicemen in the Middle East and re-broadcast the messages in New Zealand.

5. Prudence Gregory recalls and describes the return of the Māori Battalion to Gisborne. Recording date unknown.
