PUUKENGA - AN EXPERIENCE IN LEARNING. The concept of Puukenga is one borrowed from traditional Māori learning principles and unified with western theories and practies. The concept is embodied in the new centre for Māori Learning at Auckland's Unitec (formerly Carrington Polytechnic). The building was opened recently by Dame Miraka Szazy. In the programme are Charles Berryman, Dean of Faculty, Hare Paniora, HOD, staff (Ngapo Wehi, Haromi Williams, Pio and Kiri Jacobs, Marilyn Brewin) and some of the students who provided the rituals, entertainment, and hospitality.
"To know your culture is to know your identity, and that helps you to accept yourself and you can say to yourself; 'I know who I am, I respect who I am. This person that is me is good, and I can succed in anything I do." Anything that the Pakekha can do, I can do." An excerpt from Dame Miraka Szazy's speech at the opening ceremony.
