"I am the River; the River I am", that saying describes the identiy and the intensity with which the people of Wanganui feel for their river, a place of healing, a place of learning and a place as the source of their survival.
As the people prepare their case to be heard by the Waitangi tribunal, they have narrated the history of the river going back to the origins of the mountains and the river itself. One kaumatua said, "What we want is not monetary compensation, but the caretakership and the mana of the river".
Featured in the programme are:
- Nick Tangaroa,(Kaumatua, historian,and scholar)
- Tom Turupa Hawira, (Anglican minister, Kaumatua)
- John Maihi (Ringatu Minister, Kaumatua)
- Sarah Tuka(Auntie, Kuia 80yrs, oral historian)
- Programme recorded at Koroniti Marae 40kms from Wanganui city.
