A farewell to Sir Peter and Lady Margaret Buck was held in the Māori Community Centre, Freemans Bay, Auckland on March 31, 1949.

Sir Peter Buck a well-known historian and anthropologist has been home in New Zealand with his wife and guests from Hawaii and the South Pacific. It is hoped that on his return to Hawaii he will write a review on the position of the Māori people today, compared with twenty-two years ago, when he left for the South Pacific.

Among the many people to bestow accolades upon Sir Peter were Tapiata Paikea from Te Tai Tokerau.

Pei Te Hurinui Jones representing King Koroki and Ngāti Tuwharetoa addresses Sir Peter. He begins "Ngāti Akarana, tēnā koutou.." and then sings a waiata whaiāipo, the love song by Te Kāhui for Te Heuheu Herea of Ngāti Tūwharetoa: "Tērā Taranaki te tū mai ra..." He then concludes his speech.

Sir Apirana Ngata, speaks and after his speech provides his own waiata aroha and sings two pao.

Entertainment is provided by rangatahi from Ngāti Porou and the Prime Minister Peter Fraser speaks also.
