Continuation of the series of Taupo Moana from Dat 419/Item 1 MPT 1114.
Part 5 Caves of the Lakeside.

In the days before Europeans the only tranpsort across the waters of Taupo Moana was by canoe and the old time Māori who paddle across were glad of the many caves around the shores as these gave them refuge in times of sudden storms or when they were fleeing from persuers.

Many of these caves have names with specfic meanings and stories that go with the naming of these caves such as Whakamoenga meaning resting place and others.

The interviewee goes on to speak about Tuwharetoa food traditions.
