This year the NZBC and the Māori Purposes Fund Board held a competition through out NZ for the best compositions in three catergories.

1. The best original tune for Māori action song.

2. poi song or chant

3. and the best Māori lyric for action song or poi chant.

The judges were Dr.Doug Sinclair of Hamilton, Ashley Henan and Wiremu
Kerekere of the NZBC.

- The poi chant was won equally by Rev A Broughton of Masterton.
"Takahuri ana nga mahara" and Flora Edwards and Pukehuia
Cotter of St.Josephs College, Hawkes Bay.
The second prize for a modern action song went to Mrs.Margaret Aggett of Gisborne.

First prize for the best original tune for a Māori Action song went to Kohine Ponika of Ruatoki.
"Toia mai ra, kumea mai ra".

Special prize was given to Ngapine Thompson of Queen Victoria School for her composition of "Taku waahi Tapu".
