Sir John Tūrei has been a kaumātua and a member of the Carrington Polytechnic Council, now the Unitechnic Institute of Technology for the past 14 years, he has been a Kaumātua in the Ministry of Justice, and a personal advisor to the Secrtary of Justice since 1991, he has also acted as advisor to the Department of Socail Welfare and the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, he is a foundation member of Radio New Zeland Board, and has assisted in Maor progammes, and played a leading roll in the refurbishment of the Auckland Māori Community Centre.

Sir John Tūrei was the first Chairperson of Te Ūnga Waka Marae in Epsom, kaumātua to Te Waka Huia Kapa Haka Roopu, he was a founation member to the Lion Foundation Scholarship Baord for young Māori achievers, Chairpserson of the Te Māori Committee, he has lead cultural delegations to South Kōrea , China, India and the United States of America. He is the recipient of the Radio New Zealand award for his coverage of the Te Māori Exhibition and in 1994 was granted a Unitec Scholarship.. "RISE SIR JOHN" .
