The story of the Patea canoe and the coming of Turi, introduced in English and told in Māori by Maui Onekura, a direct descendant of Turi.

The events of the story are then described in English in an interview with Maui Onekura. The English account describes why Turi left Hawaiki, his companions in the canoe Aotea, the birth of his son in the canoe, pukeko, kūmara and rats (kiore) brought with them, their arrival in New Zealand, reasons for choosing Patea to settle, and the events following their settlement.
