TAPU:

TAPU is the bases of mental spiritual and moral life affecting all aspects of
traditional Māori life, TAPU is thing of an infinite variety and has many
applications, prominate amongst these was the maintenace of "mana" of ...
..."rangatira tanga"... the protection of the individual and especially the
protection of tribal property. Above all else the observance of tribal customs
and law. Laws and customs were promulgated by chiefs, the rangatiratanga,
and founded on traditions going back thousands of years.

TAPU, was applied to places, people, and objects Food was not allowed in
close proximty of situations where TAPU was concerned. There was a constant
fear of violating TAPU and children were carefully socialized in these beliefs and
customs. The sactity of TAPU must be preserved. TAPU is an invisible force which
is carried in the minds of people it is the POWER of the mind.......inherent in the
concept of TAPU is respect. Respect for people, artifacts building, spoken and
sung words, and respect for the rights of all creatures to share the enviroment.
