A new building complex erected on the ancient landing place of the Tainui canoe at Te Umupuia near Clevedon, a papakainga for the Ngai Tai people of Torere-nui-a-Rua near Opotiki who later disused the site, will be opened on Friday. Two renowned ancestors were tohunga of ta moko, Anaru Makiwhara and rangatira Tarati Te Irirangi whose portrait was painted by George French Angus in 1844 at Te Umupuia. The complex has been the vision of Mrs Rachael Ngeungeu Te Irirangi Zister CBE, JP. A carved meetinghouse according to Te Umupuia adherent David Simmons is being constructed by Pakariki Harrison and Gordon Hadfield. The new complex will be opened by the Governor General Sir Paul Reeves, one of his final official functions before ending his term in office towards the end of November.
