Tomoana, Phillip, Speaker/Kaikōrero, New Zealand. Army. Expeditionary Force, 2nd. Battalion, 28. B Company

28 Māori Battalion Soldier
Kaikōrero: An oral history-style interview with Phillip Tomoana. He says he was a railway worker when he signed up to fight in 1941. He wanted to join the 28th Māori Battalion, however as there was a long waiting list and it looked as though he may not get in, so he joined the NZEF, and once overseas he was able to transfer to the Māori Battalion and was drafted to the 18th Platoon of the B Company.

Mr. Tomoana goes on to talk about the ship Empress of Britain and their trip to Egypt from New Zealand and the places they called into as they travelled. He talks about the battle in Solum], Egypt.

He refers to a reunion trip in 1972 to Germany, also comments on a reunion in Wellington 1947. Mr Tomoana talks about his mates who died along the way and the strong leadership they enjoyed.
