Karanga

In the first recording, an unidentified kaikaranga talks about the karanga. She says there are many types of karanga, however no matter where, it is an acknowledgement of visitors arriving for a particular occasion, with acknowledgements from the living to the dead.

The wording often varies from one occasion to another. For example a karanga to a group of school children just visiting a marae may be quite different to that of a tangihanga, or a karanga to overseas visitors.

She talks about her first experience doing the karanga and the significance of it. She says she plans to write a booklet to help young women learning karanga.

In the second recording, unidentified Māori rangatahi and pakeke speak about the education system, at a national youth council hui.
