Broadcaster Doug Smith introduces a programme about the 5th New Zealand Engineers Works Company which has its headquarters, workshops and stores depot at a former cellulose factory on the outskirts of the town of Bofu [now called Hofu.]
He recently toured their premises and saw some of the work the Engineers are undertaking. He mentions the men who showed him around, Sergeant Major Tom Reardon and Sergeant Jim Craig. Lance Corporal W. Thompson and Sapper R. J. Mitchell showed him a Japanese landing craft which the New Zealanders have converted for delivering supplies to other units around the coast.
An interview follows with Major Percy Childs of the Engineers [military service number 502382]. He talks about the work they are doing: at Yamaguchi they are building a camp for 3rd Battalion, at Kiwa they are building a hospital, and at Ozuki, they are building a camp for 2nd Battalion, New Zealand Regiment. The work is done by Japanese labourers supervised by the Engineers. The men enjoy swimming at local beaches Tonomi and Aio. He sends greetings to his wife and family in Athlone Crescent.
Sergeant Jim Craig [634394] from the Stores Depot is interviewed about his work. Most supplies come from a depot on the other side of Kure, or through the American 8th Army. Most supplies come by rail, and timber by barge. At the stores depot, Japanese tradesmen make tables, desks and other carpentry work which is sent to different units.
This recording is one of a series made by the New Zealand Broadcasting Service unit stationed with J Force troops in Japan, 1946-1948. The recordings were sent back for playing on radio in New Zealand as part of the series "With the Kiwis in Japan."
