This is the story of Tainui’s arrival from Aitutaki.

“Ko te mana i tāhuna hei kawe i te waka i noho i runga i a Paneiraira. Mō ngā pō, ko Whakaahu te whetū i tēneki taha iti o te Mangaroa. I te awatea, ko ngā manu, e kī neki ko ngā toroa ingoingo, ko rātou hoki e haere ana ki te whenua nui i te tonga, ā, ka whiti noa hoki i te Tiritiri o Te Moana.”
“The sacred guardian and guide for the journey was no other but, Paneiraira. During the night they were guided by the star, Canopus, which was slightly left than the Milkyway. During the say they followed the migratory course of the royal albatross making its way to the Antarctic by way of New Zealand.”

The story continues to describe the month Tainui departed Rangiātea, the arrival of Tainui to Whangaparaoa, the sighting of New Zealand’s pōhutukawa and meeting the Te Arawa canoe.

“Ka tautohe a Tainui rāua ko Te Arawa i Whangaparaoa, ā, ka puta a Te Arawa ka rere i te takutai. Engari a Tainui ka noho mō te wā iti.”
“After brief discourse at Whangaparaoa, Te Arawa departed and sailed away leaving Tainui behind. However, Tainui stayed but a little while.”
Ka haere tonu tēnei pakiwaitara ki te kōrero mō te ūnga atu o Tainui ki Ōpōtiki i reira heke atu ai a Tōrerenui, mō te ūnga atu ki Te Ranga o Taikehu, ki te awa i Tāmaki me Ōpuapua anō. Ka puta ngā kōrero mō te hē a Marama, te wahine punarua a Hoturoa me te Maunga-Reiputa-a-Hoturoa.
The story continues to describe Tainui’s landing in Ōpōtiki where Tōrerenui stayed, Tainui’s entrance into the Waitematā, the Tāmaki and Ōpuapua rivers. It goes on to talk about Marama, Hoturoa’s second wife who had committed adultery and the creation of Maunga-Reiputa-a-Hoturoa.
