Nine bands compete for the top prize in the national finals of the XTRA Smokefree Rockquest ‘98. Held at at the Brice Mason Theatre on Auckland’s North Shore. The bands (who all perform and are briefly interviewed) are:

Fluid (Kristin School, North Shore)
Axemen (Penrose High School)
Tinderstick (Taradale High School)
Anika Moa (as Anika) (Hornby High School)
Nullipore (Golden Bay High School)
Vaawise (Linwood, Hagley & Christchurch Boys High School)
The Grinners (Hamilton Boys High School)
Handsome Geoffrey (Hamilton Girls High School) - featuring Anna Coddington and Aidee Walker
Son Of Spank (Kapiti & Tawa Colleges)

Third place is announced from the stage as .. the Axemen! Second place ... Vaawise! The winners ... Handsome Geoffrey!

Also in the programme: a look at the beginnings of the competition earlier in the year, a catch-up with last year’s winners Atlas Woods (Kuranui & Wairarapa Colleges), the Smokefree Pacifica Award winners - Tribal Vibes (Te Wharekura o Rakaumanga, Huntly), the Wellington regional finals, and Most Promising Woman Musician award winner - Anika Moa.

This television show also features interviews with Ryan Monga (Ardijah), Pete Rainey (Rockquest Judge), Mike Fabulous, Redford Grenell, Brendon Doig and Anika Moa.
