There are new calls for more firepower for front line police officers after yesterdays siege on the Hauraki Plains. Police uncovered a substantial arsenal inside the house, more proof they say that firearms controls should be tighter. Police say the siege could have ended tragically if it wasn’t for special negotiators . A couple appeared in Court in Hamilton today facing charges including attempted murder.

Pensioners could see their retirement income cut in half after the budget. That is the latest revelation to come from the leaked Social Welfare papers. Married couples earning over 240 dollars a week could have to pay half of it back in tax.

In Christchurch eleven members of the Harris white power gang were jailed for up to two years for their part in the shooting of two Highway 61 members.

The Northland tug Aranui is tonight on its way to help a Chinese cargo ship suffering engine trouble in heavy seas north of New Zealand. The tug won’t reach the ship until Friday.

An early dumping of snow severed the South Island today.

The Traffic Safety Service is discontinuing the use of motor bikes for traffic duties due to cost. They say petrol cars are now cheaper and more useful. The bikes will be off the roads by the end of the year.

Eight year old aids patient Eve Van Grafhorst has been shouted a trip to Disneyland by two Lotto winners.

The bids came thick and fast at the Auckland Stock Exchange as toys were auctioned for charity. The toys will all go to Auckland”s Princess Mary Children’s Hospital. The money will go to Radio Lolly Pop, an in house radio service for children in hospital.
