“On Christmas Eve 1953 the Wellington to Auckland rail express, carrying 267 passengers plunged into the Whangaehu River [at Tangiwai]. The tragedy touched many lives. This is based on the true story of one of those.” - Opening title.

The tv drama centres on of Nerissa Love (played by Rose McIvor) who perished in the Tangiwai rdisaster while her fiancé, cricketer Bob Blair, was playing in South Africa.

“Despite their best efforts, New Zealand went on to lose the test match ...” - End title.

Weta Workshop constructed the one-sixth scale replica locomotive with 11 carriages as well as the location itself, including the tracks, the river and lahar.
